Whitewater Rafting (May 27-29, 2010)

Picture
Troop 17 dared the rapids of the Deerfield river in Charlemont, MA. Special thanks to the Academy at Charlemont for allowing the Troop to camp on their property!

Mt. Cardigan (June 25-27, 2010)

Picture
Ain't no mountain high enough. Ain't no valley low enough - to keep Troop17 away.  The Troop travelled to Orange, NH to tackle the best the 3,155 ft peak of Mt.Cardigan had to offer.  Not only did they summit the mountain, but they even spent a little extra time hiking on the trail (Tip: always check your map).

International-themed Camping & Bike-Trip  (Oct 15-17, 2010)

Picture
The Troop travelled to Camp Squanto in Plymounth, MA to take advantage of the extensive bike trails in Myles Standish State Forest.  The trip featured an international theme. Each patrol chose a country, decorated their sites accordingly, and then participated in an international cook-off.

Webelos Woods (Nov. 5-7, 2010)

Picture
Camp Norse was the destination for the annual Webelos Woods.  Troop 17 hosted thirteen second year Webelos Scouts, and showed them what real patrol camping was like.  The Troop hosted a Monkey Bridge station.

Klondike Derby (January 28-29, 2011)

Picture
Troop 17 travelled to the snowy territory of Camp Norse in Kingston, MA to take on the challenges of the Council's Klondike Derby. 2+ feet of snow greeted the Troop, as they toughed it out in the Adirondack cabins.

Mt. Cranmore Tubing and Skiing (Feb. 12-13, 2011)

Picture
The Troop hit the slopes of Mt. Cranmore in North Conway, NH to have some fun tubing and skiing.  We hit the slopes on Saturday night, tearing up the tubing park (4 tubes at once!) and the mountain coaster.  We bunked right in a lodge (actually, the daycare center), then awoke to a sunny day of ski fun.

Mt. Monadnock (March 22-24, 2011)

Picture
13°F temperatures and brisk winds didn't stop Troop 17 from reaching their goal of getting to the top of the 3165 ft Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey, NH.  The patrols chose their own routes, and braved the ice-covered granite as they raced each other to the top.  The Troop stayed in Camp Wanocksett, a nearby Scout camp.

Great American Cleanup of Mansfield (May 7, 2011)

Picture
Troop 17 did their part to help out the community by participating in the Great American Cleanup of Mansfield.  As the Troop was camping on the Town's scheduled week, they chose to volunteer a week later.  Plenty of beautifying went on.

Beal Island Kayaking (May 13-15, 2011)

Picture
Jumping off from the Appalachian Mountain Club's Knubble Bay property in Georgetown, Maine (near Bath), the troop kayaked to Beal Island.  The island is also owned by the AMC, & allows only 30 campers at a time.  We camped on the island (along with the porcupines), and explored the area in the morning.  At noon we set out in the kayak fleet for a 10.8 mile paddle on Knubble & Sheepscot Bays.  Along the way, we spied several nesting oprey, a bald eagle & more seals in the water (not more that 15 feet away) than we could count.  After the paddle, we had a short campfire & a daring island rescue.

Troop Scavenger Hunt (May 28, 2011)

Picture
The Troop was unleashed on Boston to participate in an annual Scavenger Hunt.  At stake was the Golden Rodent award.  The Troop embarked on a mission of mystery, investigation, teamwork and documentation as they searched the streets, alleys and parks of the city of Boston in a quest to find the historic, the weird and the unexplained.  The photos tell the whole story.

Corey Shea Memorial Flagpole Dedication (June 26, 2011)

Picture
Members of Boy Scout Troops 17 and 7 were joined by Mansfield's Veteran's Agent, John Hogan, Selectman Jess Aptowicz, Highway Department Mark Cook, and Public Buildings Department Mike Ahearn in raising the last of 43 flags flown on the Corey Shea Memorial Flagpole at the Mansfield South Common prior  to the dedication ceremony on Sunday, June 26, 2011.
