Patrol Assignments for Summer Movies on the Common

6/18/2012

Picture
Once again this Summer, the Troop will be holding a fundraiser during the town's Movies with the Stars on the South Common.  Each Patrol has selected as different movie night, and will be staffing a concession stand during the movies.  The Troop will be offering snacks and drinks to those attending the movies.

This activity is not only a great opportunity for the Troop to earn a bit of money for new equipment and to offset the cost of activities, but is fun for the Scouts, as well (they get to see the movies).

All patrol members should meet in the kitchen of the Orthodox Congregational Church at their appointed time.  We will also need the help of several patrol parents at each event to help prepare popcorn and to oversee the concession stand.  Please see Mrs. Vickers for details.

This is a Class B event
Note: Scouts should report at the times given.  The events start 30 minutes after the reporting time.

Please return any Troop gear by June 18 Court of Honor

6/14/2012

Scouts & Parents, we need your help!   A significant amount of troop gear appears to have made its way into your homes, and we need it back.   Our inventory of tents is especially depleted.  Currently we have approximately $1000 in tents and troop gear (i.e., tarps, coolers, etc) that is owned by the Troop not in the Troop's possession.  Frankly, we don't have enough tents right now to camp with the Troop.

If we do not receive this gear back, the Troop will be forced to replace it (at the cost of program to your Scout, or at the cost of higher dues next year), or we will be forced to forego events.  Please help us avoid that unpleasantness by searching your garages, basements and sheds for any gear that may belong to the Troop.

If you have any Troop’s gear, please return as soon as possible, preferably by the Court of Honor on June 18.  See any Adult leader or the Troop Quartermaster to return gear.
Attached is an excerpt from the Troop's Quartermaster Handbook, which shows how Troop gear should be taken care of when taken home.

At the end of each Troop outing, Scouts from each patrol are typically assigned to bring home tents/tarps to dry, air and clean.

·         The Troop Quartermaster records who was assigned each piece of gear to bring home.

·         Each Scout should take care of the gear (i.e., clean, dry, & air) immediately after the event ends (note: mold can grow on wet tents/tarps in as little as 48 hours)

o    Note any damage.  A good tip is to write what is wrong on blue painter’s tape.

·         Gear should be repacked as neatly as it was issued (i.e., tents rolled & tarps rolled or folded)

·         The Scout should return the gear to the Troop Quartermaster (noting any damage or missing pieces) at the next Troop meeting, and the QM notes that the gear is returned.

o    We understand that family circumstances, weather and other unforeseen circumstances may prevent that from happening.  It is important to get the gear back as soon as possible.

o    Note: Scouts should not simply drop gear in the Scout room without informing anyone, as this disrupts or inventory system, and allows damaged gear back into the trailer without getting fixed (not a good find in the dark on a Friday night’s trip).

Court of Honor (SPL & PL elections, Pack Inspections) - June 18

6/12/2012

All are invited to attend the Troop 17 End of Year Court of Honor on Monday June 18 at 7pm.  Besides honoring the Scouts's acheivements from the past few months, ths Court of Honor will also feature elections of a new Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) and Patrol Leaders (PL).  Pack Inspections for the White Water Rafting trip will also be held before the Court of Honor.

All parents and siblings are encouraged to attend. Scouts benefit greatly from your attendance.
We ask that each family bring a dessert item (cookies, brownies, fruit) to share. The troop will provide lemonade and coffee.

Elections:  Scouts wishing to be considered for the position of Senior Patrol Leader must submit their name to current SPL Ethan Ham prior to Monday's Court of Honor.  Scouts should be prepared with a short speech, which discusses their qualifications for the position and their plans for how they intend to lead the Troop.

Pack Inspections:  All those participating in the White Water Rafting Trip, should be prepared for a pack inspection on Monday night, prior to the Court of Honor.  This trip involves a special packing list, which can be found on the Events page.
Due the unique nature of the packing list, all Scouts (even those who have completed the Camping MB) will be required to complete a pack inspection.

Picture
The Troop will be doing a service project in support of the Relay for Life event on Saturday, June 16th from 9-11 a.m.
We will meet at the new foot bridge in front of the Jordan/Jackson school near the JV baseball field at 9 a.m. for our assignment.  Typically, we have been assigned to clean trash from the overnight camping area.

We have also been asked to help empty the recycling barrels on Friday, June 15th from 8-10 p.m. If anyone can also help out that day, please contact Mr. Ham.

This is a Class B event.  Scout, family and friends are welcome.  As we will likely be collecting litter, gloves are recommended.

The Relay for Life is an event run by the America Cancer Society to help communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.  You can find more information at their website
