5/4/2015

Permission slips for the May 29-31 campout at Acadia National Park are due at tonight’s troop meeting.  There are a lot of logistics associated with this trip and we’ll need to have an accurate count.

Cost is $75 per person, which covers transportation, campground and other expenses.

Below is a description from the Troop's e-mail updates:

Acadia National Park Trip –
Fri., May 29th - Sun., May 31st – The troop is setting off to the Northeast's only National Park! We will be motoring to Bar Harbor, Maine, and will be staying at a campsite on the ocean.  There will be plenty of hiking and a chance to view the earliest dawn in the nation, atop Cadillac Mountain.  We will round out the trip with a cruise around Bar Harbor where we might see nesting bald eagles!  Permission slip is due this coming Monday, May 4th. Cost will be $75 per person and attendees will be limited to capacity of transportation vehicle. Parents are welcome to attend, with preference given to scouts.

Keep those Fire Hydrants Clear! 3ft around & down to the ground!

MANSFIELD NEEDS YOUR HELP!!!
Mother Nature hasn't been too cooperative with the snow the past few days, and is promising more ahead.

We have been contacted by the Mansfield Fire Department and MEMA, to help out, once again, with clearing the fire hydrants.

All scouts should help in clearing fire hydrants in their own neighborhoods for the time being.

We would ask that you also talk to you friends and neighbors to have them help out any way they can.

Depending on the weather in the next few days, MEMA may once again ask us to help with shoveling details.  More info to come...

Mansfield has approximately 2000 hydrants that need to be cleared.  MFD and MEMA simply don't have the personnel to clear that many hydrants.  Further, any firefighter clearing hydrants is taking away from their primary job of public safety.  Many hands make light work, and we can help the Fire Department by doing our duty. Even one or two hydrants per scout will make a significant difference!

Every second counts when fighting a fire.  A fire doubles in size & intensity every minute.  If a firefighter has to spend time clearing a hydrant, that is time that isn't spent fighting a fire.  A simple 5 minute delay increase the fire's magnitude by 16-fold. A 10-minute delay is 512-fold!  By clearing those hydrants, we could be helping to save a life, a home or a business.  Please do your good turn today by clearing those hydrants!

Any hours given to fire hydrant clearing will count toward service hours.

E-Prep Weekend at Camp Norse - May 1-3

1/13/2015

Be Prepared is the Boy Scout Motto, and Annawon Council is holding an event to see if you are prepared for an Emergency. You have seen stories of Scouts coming to the aid of those in need after tornadoes, hurricanes, fires.  This weekend will hone your skills to help those in need. The E-Prep Weekend centered around the (Eagle-required) Emergency Preparedness merit badge, but also includes the opportunity to earn the First Aid merit badge.

The camping event will be held on May 1-3.

The event will feature an emergency disaster drill (Note: nobody but the organizers know the emergency. Be Prepared!), which is supported by the area's real Emergency Management teams.  Support equipment will be on-hand. This drill will be realistic, and will surely test your knowledge and preparedness.

Scouts who don't already have the two merit badges can participate in the Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge (including the First Aid Merit Badge, as well).  Scouts who have already earned the merit badges may participate as part of the E Prep team.

Per the Annawon website, Scouts taking the Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge should be First Class and above.

More information is available at the Annawon Council website.

A sign-up sheet will be located in the Scout room for those interested.

BTW - did you know that there is a BSA Emergency Preparedness Award?  Find out more.
