Pack Smart for Summer Camp

6/30/2013

Footlockers:  Many Scouts have found that the best way to pack for summer camp is to use a lightweight footlocker (such as the ones shown on the left).  The footlockers fit easily under a Scout's cot, and is a great way to keep things organized.  It's also a great way to keep things from getting wet (should, in the rare event, we get rain).

You can purchase these footlockers at a number of stores, including Target, Wal-Mart and Bass-Pro, among others.  A footlocker should last through a Scout's may years at summer camp, so is a good investment.  Note:  Be careful with the height, if you are not purchasing a footlocker of the kind shown - a plastic storage bin is typically too tall to fit under a cot, and will take up valuable floor space in the walled tent.
Note: You may want to purchase these as soon as possible to avoid the summer rush.
Clothes Storage: We have found that one of the most effective ways to pack clothes for camp is to store them in plastic zippered baggies.  Place a whole day's worth of clothes (shirt, pants, underwear, socks) in the baggies, and they will be safe from rain, will be all together, and will be easily accessible (even in those dark tents).

The baggies are also great for when Scouts head up to the showers (a pause - while the laughter subsides). Seriously, it  keeps everything dry, and avoids the trail of clothes that gets dropped on the way to the showers.

Toss a zippered baggie in your daypack, and you can keep your backpack from getting wet from that damp swimsuit & towel, too.

The 2 to 2-1/2 gallon bags seem ideal for most Scouts.  Smaller scouts may be
able to get away with 1 gallon (especially, if they are packing shorts).

The best part is that you can reuse  the bags next year.  A Scout is Thrifty!

There will be a mandatory summer camp meeting for all Scouts and parents attending camp on Monday, July 22 at 7pm.  Please meet in the vestry of the church.

This meeting will detail the merit badge selections, troop/patrol activities, the schedule and packing lists.  All required documentation will be verified, as well.

If your Scout (or you) take medication, you must be sure to have a completed a medication administration form.  Epi pens and inhalers require completion of an additional form.  All forms may be found on the Troop's Summer Camp page, under "upcoming events". (see "Medication" section).

Note: Medications will not be collected at this meeting. Please be prepared to present them when you drop your son off at Hidden Valley.  Please note that all medications must be in original containers and marked with "Troop 17" at the top.

Lovell's Island Trip

6/23/2013

Picture
We had a great time a Wompatuck State Park in Hingham, MA this past weekend (June 12-23, 2013).  The park has several campsites reserved just for Scout Troops, and they are very well maintained.
We spent Saturday at sea on the island ferries, then spent a few hours at Lovell's Island.  There, we were treated to a tour by a DCR specialist, who talked a bit about the wildlife on (& around) the island and the history of the island.   The Scouts then got to spend some time exploring the island, including its World War I and World War II battlements.

Check out some photos here.

Each family should bring a treat to share, the troop will provide drinks.  (You may drop your treat in the kitchen before heading up to the Court of Honor).

BTW - now might be a good time to check the garage/ basement/ shed for any troop equipment that may be hanging around, so that you can return it.
