Pack Smart for Summer Camp

Footlockers:  Many Scouts have found that the best way to pack for summer camp is to use a lightweight footlocker (such as the ones shown on the left).  The footlockers fit easily under a Scout's cot, and is a great way to keep things organized.  It's also a great way to keep things from getting wet (should, in the rare event, we get rain).

You can purchase these footlockers at a number of stores, including Target, Wal-Mart and Bass-Pro, among others.  A footlocker should last through a Scout's may years at summer camp, so is a good investment.  Note:  Be careful with the height, if you are not purchasing a footlocker of the kind shown - a plastic storage bin is typically too tall to fit under a cot, and will take up valuable floor space in the walled tent.
Note: You may want to purchase these as soon as possible to avoid the summer rush.
Clothes Storage: We have found that one of the most effective ways to pack clothes for camp is to store them in plastic zippered baggies.  Place a whole day's worth of clothes (shirt, pants, underwear, socks) in the baggies, and they will be safe from rain, will be all together, and will be easily accessible (even in those dark tents).

The baggies are also great for when Scouts head up to the showers (a pause - while the laughter subsides). Seriously, it  keeps everything dry, and avoids the trail of clothes that gets dropped on the way to the showers.

Toss a zippered baggie in your daypack, and you can keep your backpack from getting wet from that damp swimsuit & towel, too.

The 2 to 2-1/2 gallon bags seem ideal for most Scouts.  Smaller scouts may be
able to get away with 1 gallon (especially, if they are packing shorts).

The best part is that you can reuse  the bags next year.  A Scout is Thrifty!
