Cardigan Trip which will take place on February 17-20th. This trip is for approved Star & above Scouts, who have previously registered with Mr. Ham. The High Cabin sleeps 12 (bunk beds with mattresses). We will be having 2 practice hikes prior to our trip. The practice hikes will be with full back packs in the Blue Hills. All participating will be required to participate in the two practice hikes. During our up-coming preparations, we will be sampling freeze-dried meals, reviewing cold weather hiking & first aid, checking boot sizes (in order to place an order with EMS for the rental of snow shoes prior to our trip), and a variety of topics to make our trip a really nice experience. Further information about Mt. Cardigan can be reviewed on the AMC's website at: www.outdoors.org , click on "Lodging" at the top, and then click on the "Cabins & Campgrounds" tab. Practice Hikes (Jan 6th & Jan 27th) Scouts and adults participating in the Mt. Cardigan Expedition will meet at the Church at 8 a.m. for our hike with full back packs-be sure to review your list as we will be looking through our back packs after the hike. On the agenda: review our equipment, pick our hiking route for the morning, fill our water bottles and head off. We will plan to be back at the Church around 1-1:30 p.m. Everyone will be asked to bring a suitably delicious snack and lunch with them. Planned Itinerary for the Mt. Cardigan Trip (Feb 17-20)
February 17th -- Leave Mansfield around 4 p.m. (to avoid traffic) -- Pick up snow shoes at EMS and arrive at the Epsom New Rye Congregational Church in N.H. to spend the night February 18th -- Leave the Church by 7 a.m., have a hearty breakfast at an awesome restaurant -- Arrive/check in at the Mt. Cardigan Base Lodge by late morning, -- 2 mile hike to the High Cabin and spend the night February 19th -- Day hikes from and to the High Cabin, spend second night February 20th -- Leave the High Cabin by 10 a.m. & check out, -- Have a meal on the way home, -- Return snow shoes -- Back in Mansfield by late afternoon (dependent on traffic) Check out the new photos from the New England Air Museum trip and the Search and Rescue Merit Badge course! -- New England Air Museum Trip photos -- SAR Merit badge course photos As always, you can access photos from the site's "Photos" tab. The troop will be doing its annual bike trip Oct. 19-21 at Camp Greenough in Yarmouth Port. We need permission slips and camping fees for this outing no later than the troop meeting on Monday, Oct. 15. As usual, we are also looking for adults to drive and/or chaperone. Please let Mr. Lucht know asap if you are able to participate.
All are invited to attend the Troop 17 End of Year Court of Honor on Monday June 18 at 7pm. Besides honoring the Scouts's acheivements from the past few months, ths Court of Honor will also feature elections of a new Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) and Patrol Leaders (PL). Pack Inspections for the White Water Rafting trip will also be held before the Court of Honor.
All parents and siblings are encouraged to attend. Scouts benefit greatly from your attendance. We ask that each family bring a dessert item (cookies, brownies, fruit) to share. The troop will provide lemonade and coffee. Elections: Scouts wishing to be considered for the position of Senior Patrol Leader must submit their name to current SPL Ethan Ham prior to Monday's Court of Honor. Scouts should be prepared with a short speech, which discusses their qualifications for the position and their plans for how they intend to lead the Troop. Pack Inspections: All those participating in the White Water Rafting Trip, should be prepared for a pack inspection on Monday night, prior to the Court of Honor. This trip involves a special packing list, which can be found on the Events page. Due the unique nature of the packing list, all Scouts (even those who have completed the Camping MB) will be required to complete a pack inspection. All participants of the White Water Rafting Trip (June 30-July 1) must fill out a Liability Release form (found on the upcoming events page of the website), and return it to Mr. Hamilton as soon as possible.
Also, please refer to the White Water rafting entry on the Upcoming Events page to see what to bring. This event has a different packing list than our typical outings. Be prepared. An Emergency Preparedness Weekend is being held at Camp Norse on June 1-3, 2012. Seveal programs are offered. Scouts can participate in either the Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge (which includes the First Aid Merit Badge), the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program or the Amateur Radio Technician Study, Test Prep and Testing session. Scouts taking the Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge should be First Class and above or have Scoutmaster approval. For more information or to register, see the Council Website. An information page is available here, as well. Note that this is not a Troop event. Individuals should sign-up at the Council website. Space is limited, so Scouts should register as soon as possible. The dates have changed on the upcoming Purgatory Chasm Trip.
The new dates are: May 25-27 Permission slips are due on May 7, and there will be a pack inspection during the May 21st Troop meeting. See the Upcoming Events Page for more information Scouts will not only be able to tackle the boudler fields offered at the site, but will have the opportunity to work on the Geology Merit Badge. There will be a pack inspection at the April 23 Troop meeting or those attending the Treasure Valley Camping Trip. Please see the Troop packing list, so that you are prepared.
