It's time to start preparing for Summer Camp!

7/7/2016

Your SPL and ASPL are headed to Hidden Valley for the pre-camp meeting on Monday.  The mandatory summer camp meeting is at the church Monday (July 25) at 7pm, and rumors are that a huge truck carrying Chessters is heading North.   That could only mean one thing.  SUMMER CAMP is around the corner!!!

It is time to start mentally and physically getting yourself ready for  summer camp.  Here are a few tips to help you get ready and enjoy the week in the "Land made for Scouting":  Be Prepared!
  • Start thinking of all the fun we will have.
  • Familiarize yourself with the summer camp info on our Troop website.  Basic info is here. (or http://www.troop17bsa.org  – then look under the  “upcoming events” menu item).
  • Review your merit badge selections and prerequisites on the troop website.
  • Get your merit badge pamphlets and  WORK THOSE PREREQUISITES (it makes the badges go much easier)
  • Get your gear together (check the packing lists), and pack them according to this blog post
  • Get your daypack ready - it'll be with you most almost the entire time
  • Start moving your diet toward drinking lots of water instead of energy drinks or soda. Hydrate now!
  • Walk to as many places as you can, so your legs get used to being up and around all the time
  •  If you have new shoes/ boots, start wearing them around the house to break them in (blisters are NOT your friend)
  • Get yourself ready for the temperature by getting outside of the air conditioning.  It's amazing how you adjust.
  • Start thinking of a couple of skits, songs, stunts or stories for the many campfires we'll have.
  • Get with your patrol mates, and talk about having some patrol adventures - like scaling Mt. Shannon, fishing, etc.
  • Packing always takes longer than you think!  Don't wait till the last minute.
Do a little bit each day.  Be Prepared... By biting off a little everyday, you'll be ready for a super-fantastic summer camp!

For some helpful packing tips, check out this post in the news blog on
how to pack smart.

Griswold Scout Reservation is looking for the best candidates for the 'green machine'.  YOU could be part of it!
Both Hidden Valley and Camp Bell are looking for the best candidates to join the 2015 summer camp Staff at Griswold Scout Reservation!  Scouts who will be aged 15+ as of June 1, 2015 are eligible.

If interested (and who wouldn't be?) should submit an application, then schedule an interview, as soon as possible.  You can choose from over 70 hours of available interview slots from December 29th through January 24th in seven different locations around NH and MA!  (Mr. Callahan even mentioned Skype interviews may be possible.)  Whether you want to be a CIT (2 weeks at camp)  or staff a program area, there is something for you. We guarantee you will not only have an awesome job, but you'll have fun at it!

All of the details, including the application and interview times can be found at:
www.nhscouting.org/GSRjobs.

Summer Camp Merit Badge Selections due April 28.

4/15/2014

Last night, Scouts were given forms to select their program/ merit badges at Summer Camp. Parents should review the selections with their Scouts to help them get the most out of Summer Camp.

Merit Badge Selections are due back to Mr. Gillogly on April 28.

There are three merit badge sessions offered during the day.  Some badges are one session, while others (many of the Eagle-required badges) are two sessions.  Be sure to check the schedule, so that you do not overbook.  The schedule was handed out to all Scouts present at the April 14th meeting.  You may also find the schedule on page 30 of the Leader's Guide.

We highly suggest consulting the Pre-requisite Guidebook before making your selections.  This guide will tell you all you need to prepare for ahead of camp.
If you have partial merit badges that you wish to complete, it is not necessary to register for the badge again.  Please consult with Mr. Gillogly, should you wish to complete a partial badge.

If you have any questions regarding Summer Camp, including merit badge or program selections, please contact Mr. Gillogly.

New BSA Med Form

3/3/2014

Picture
BSA has released new Annual Health and Medical Record forms (i.e., Med forms), which become effective today.  The form has been updated based on feedback from the Scouting and medical community, and is greatly simplified.  You may see the new med forms and more info here: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/healthandsafety/ahmr.aspx

Troop 17 youth and adults should fill out the "Are you Going to Camp form" , which includes Parts A,B and C.  Part C requires a doctor's signature and physical.  The form is also available on the Troop 17 website in the "downloads" area.

Note that the old med form is valid for one year after the doctor's signature.  That is, if your medical form is less than 1 year old, it is still valid.  Going forward, however, the new form must be used.  For a med form to be valid through summer camp, the latest doctor signature can be dated is August 3, 2013.

We want all Scouts to get the most out of their Summer Camp experience!  With so many different offerings and exciting programs at Griswold Scout Reservation's (GSR's) Hidden Valley, we want everyone to be made aware of all their choices. There is truly something for everyone, and we are excited to be coming back to "The Land Made for Scouting".

As always, GSR continues to enhanced their program year-after-year, and this  this year with many new programs, merit badges and other offerings.   The GSR Guidebooks will give specifics on all programs.  Older Scouts should look to the SPOKE, COPE and Valley Voyager programs for a bigger challenge..

We are attending camp this year during week 6 (July 27 - August 2).  If Scouts wish to have more than one week of summer camp experiences, they may choose to attend camp as part of a provision troop.  Please see Mr. Gillogly or Mrs. Vickers, should a Scout be interested in any older Scout program or provision camp.

Please note that all registrations for summer camp activities (including provisional weeks) must be done though the Troop.  Please see Mr. Gillogly or Mrs. Vickers, if you have any questions.
